From the Aspen Institute

Aspen's question: "Was the Christmas Day bombing attempt an isolated incident, or do we have bigger problems in aviation security? What should governments and airlines do to prevent this from happening again?"

My response: While it was and will not be an isolated event, by putting into practice extreme state-side security measures, we are responding in Pavlovian ways. The problem with the Christmas Day attempt was a failure in the larger, global security system, not with whether all passengers should have had a body scan. Our system has huge holes in it; he never should have been allowed on the plane given the security reports we had on him, as well as his profile and behavior. I also worry about full body scans for transgendered people and if their gender identity will make them unfairly targeted as suspects.
